Repair and investment for North East student halls

Powell Williams has been appointed to act as lead consultant for the completion of external repairs to a 1930s student residence in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The 170,000 sq ft Stephenson Building forms part of Northumbria University's student accommodation facility.

The contract will be delivered from Powell Williams Chester office on behalf of the building's owners, Luxembourg based Unicity Newcastle 1 Sarl, following their purchase of the property in December 2010.  The upgrade is the latest phase of works to involve Powell Williams, following initial advice provided during the original acquisition of the building in October 2009 by Talisman Properties.

The programme, which will take approximately 12 weeks, is designed to repair exposed concrete which forms detailing on the external brick structure, and arrest further decay.

Martin Hunt, partner for Powell Williams Chester office said: "It is always prudent to plan ahead, and in this case a programme is being put in place to repair the structure before long term problems emerge. This type of project helps to safeguard the building as an investment and maintain the performance of the property for the long term."

Brian Welsh, from Knightsbridge Student Housing Limited who instructed the repairs on behalf of the owners, added: "Powell Williams' familiarity with the building means a cost-effective and speedy solution for the company"
