Powell Williams completes demolition for development site on behalf of Standard Life

Powell Williams has managed a £300,000 demolition scheme on behalf of leading asset management company, Standard Life Investments. The consultancy oversaw the clearance of the 150,000 sq ft former Spitfire factory at the Elmdon Trading Estate in Birmingham.

The project saw more than 80 per cent of the building materials recycled, including the salvage of 1,100 tons of scrap metal with a value in excess of £140,000. Originally the largest single building on the business park, the site has now been prepared for future redevelopment.

Michael Jones, lead partner for Powell Williams Birmingham office, said: "Standing empty, the building faced costs of more than £200,000 per annum in void rates, whereas a cleared site offers obvious potential for redevelopment in the future. This site is ideal for a purpose built facility for a firm wanting to take advantage of the business park's location and amenities and, in the meantime, there are potential temporary uses for the land which could provide an additional revenue stream for the fund."
